William H. Ryan, Jr.


William RyanOn August 19, 2011, Governor Tom Corbett appointed William H. Ryan Jr. to a three-year term as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and to a second three-year term July 8, 2014.  Ryan continued his service as Chairman until October 8, 2015, whereafter he remains a member of the Board through his term.

Prior to his position with the Board, Mr. Ryan served for 14 years with the Office of Pennsylvania Attorney General including four months as Acting Attorney General beginning on January 18, 2011.

Earlier, Ryan served as First Deputy to both Attorneys General Corbett and Jerry Pappert, a role in which he oversaw legal and administrative matters for the agency. Prior to that, Ryan headed the Criminal Law Division under Attorney General Mike Fisher, directing investigations involving organized crime, narcotics trafficking and other public safety matters.

Ryan began his legal career with the Delaware County District Attorney's Office in 1972, working as a legal intern while in law school, then rising to the position of first assistant district attorney in 1981. In 1987, Ryan was elected District Attorney of Delaware County, then re-elected to that position in 1991. During his tenure as District Attorney, Ryan also served as President of the Pennsylvania District Attorneys Association in 1993-94.

Ryan graduated from St. Joseph's University and Villanova Law School and lives in Delaware County with his wife Debra. They have two sons, Dan and Chris.
