Gaming Control Board Reports 6.2% Revenue Increase in September

Record revenue for iGaming achieved

HARRISBURG, PA: The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported today that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming, along with fantasy contests, during September 2023 was $476,278,004, an increase of 6.20% compared to revenue generated in September 2022.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the PGCB include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals (VGTs). The PGCB has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/. 

The following chart compiles all revenue generated in September 2023 by casinos, along with fantasy contests and VGTs operated by other vendors and includes a comparison to total revenue generated in September 2022.

September’s revenue from slot machines was $199,917,301, a 0.70% increase in revenue when compared to the $198,525,285 generated in September 2022.

The number of slot machines in operation in September 2023 was 25,124 compared to 25,564 at the casinos in September 2022.

Internet Casino-Type Gaming (iGaming) Revenue

Casino games offered online generated a record amount of monthly gross revenue totaling $159,490,505 during September 2023 compared to $112,728,528 in September 2022, an increase of 41.48%.  The previous high month was March 2023 when revenue was $148,189,028.

September 2023, total sports wagering handle was $726,259,712 or 12.56% above the September 2022 total of $645,242,681. At the same time, the taxable revenue figure for September 2023 was $36,633,084, or 27.05% lower when compared to September 2022, when taxable revenue was $50,216,969.

Video Gaming Terminals

Total adjusted revenue for September 2023 for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,245,541, or 7.18% lower than September 2022 when revenue was $3,496,670. By the close of September 2023, VGT Terminal Operators were operating the maximum permitted five machines at 69 qualified truck stop establishments, compared to five machines at 66 establishments at this time last year.

About the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling involving 17 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.

The Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling involving 16 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.
