Gaming Control Board Reports Revenue of $479,377,660 for May 2023

HARRISBURG, PA: The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported today that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming along with fantasy contests during May 2023 was $479,377,660, an increase of 7.05% compared to revenue generated in May 2022.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the PGCB include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals (VGTs). The PGCB has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/. 

The following chart compiles all revenue generated in May 2023 by casinos along with fantasy contests and VGTs operated by other vendors and includes a comparison to total revenue generated in May 2022.

Slot Machine Revenue

May’s revenue from slot machines was $210,862,268, a 2.53% increase in revenue when compared to the $205,666,269 generated in May 2022.

The number of slot machines in operation in May 2023 was 25,495 compared to 26,004 at the casinos in May 2022.

Sports Wagering Revenue

May 2023 total sports wagering handle was $495,585,360 or 0.45% above the May 2022 total of $493,350,519. At the same time, the taxable revenue figure for May 2023 was $41,104,590 or 17.41% higher when compared to May 2022 when taxable revenue was $35,009,849.

Tax revenue generated from sports wagering during May 2023 was $14,797,653*.

 

Video Gaming Terminals

Total adjusted revenue for May 2023 for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,577,972 or 2.43% lower than May 2022 when revenue was $3,667,234. By the close of May 2023, VGT Terminal Operators were operating the maximum permitted five machines at 68 qualified truck stop establishments compared to five machines at 64 establishments at this time last year.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling involving 17 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.
