Monthly Pennsylvania Gaming Revenue Exceeds A Half Billion Dollars For the First Tim

Gaming Control Board reports that numerous revenue records were broken in the iGaming sector

HARRISBURG, PA:  The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported today that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming along with fantasy contests during March 2023 was $515,278,831, an increase of 11.35% compared to revenue generated in March 2022. The PGCB also noted that this monthly revenue number exceeded the half billion mark for the first time since legalized gambling began in 2006.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the PGCB include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals (VGTs). The PGCB has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/. 

 

The following chart compiles all revenue generated in March 2023 by casinos along with fantasy contests and VGTs operated by other vendors and includes a comparison to total revenue generated in March 2022.

Slot Machine Revenue

March’s revenue from slot machines was $225,408,088, a 4.98% increase in revenue when compared to the $214,721,028 generated in March 2022.

The number of slot machines in operation in March 2023 was 25,643 compared to 26,107 at the casinos in March 2022.

Internet Casino-Type Gaming (iGaming) Revenue

Casino games offered online generated gross revenue of $148,189,028 during March 2023 compared to $118,118,408 in March 2022 an increase of 25.46%.  Monthly revenue records were set for slots, table games and overall iGaming revenue.

Sports Wagering Revenue

March 2023 total sports wagering handle was $723,545,806 or 1.20% above the March 2022 total of $714,976,578. At the same time, the taxable revenue figure for March 2023 was $50,645,259 or 66.59% higher when compared to March 2022 when taxable revenue was $30,400,581.

Tax revenue generated from sports wagering during March 2023 was $18,232,293*.

Video Gaming Terminals

Total adjusted revenue for March 2023 for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,757,506 or 1.87% lower than March 2022 when revenue was $3,829,287. By the close of March 2023, VGT Terminal Operators were operating the maximum permitted five machines at 66 qualified truck stop establishments compared to five machines at 63 establishments at this time last year.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling involving 17 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.
