On February 5, 2026, Edward C. Gainey was appointed to a two-year term on the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board by House Speaker Joanna McClinton.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Gainey has dedicated his life to public service at the state and local levels. After working as an aid in the PA House of Representatives and in positions under two Pittsburgh Mayors, Gainey was elected to the House and served the 24th legislative district for 9 years.

In 2021, he ran for Mayor of Pittsburgh and was elected to a 4-year term as the 61st person, and the first Black, to hold that position. During his tenure as Mayor, Gainey tackled issues such as affordable housing, infrastructure development and advocating for peace in the city.

Gainey holds a bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University. Along with his other work in public service, he has also served as Vice Chair of the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh.

Gainey lives in the Lincoln-Lemington neighborhood of Pittsburgh with his wife Michelle. They have 3 children.
