Gaming Control Board Reports Gaming Revenue for January

Overall gaming revenue up 18% over last year

HARRISBURG, PA: The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported today that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming along with fantasy contests during January 2023 was $464,488,191 an increase of 18.15% compared to revenue generated in January 2022.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and VGTs. The Board has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/.

The following chart compiles all revenue generated in January 2023 by casinos along with fantasy contests and video gaming terminals operated by other vendors and includes a comparison to total revenue generated last January.

Slot Machine Revenue

January’s revenue from slot machines was $202,240,506, a 20.07% increase in revenue when compared to the $168,441,692 generated in January 2022.

The number of slot machines in operation in January 2023 was 25,799 compared to 26,158 at the casinos in January 2022.

January 2023 total sports wagering handle was $772,289,648 or 2.70% below the January 2022 total of $793,722,787. At the same time, the taxable revenue figure for January 2023 was $39,250,402 or 22.01% above January 2022 when taxable revenue was $32,169,931.

Tax revenue generated from sports wagering during January 2023 was $14,130,145*.

Video Gaming Terminals

Total adjusted revenue for January 2023 for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,347,366 or 7.92% higher than January 2022 when revenue was $3,101,765. By the close of January 2023, VGT Terminal Operators were operating the maximum permitted five machines at 66 qualified truck stop establishments compared to five machines at 60 establishments at this time last year.

About the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling involving 17 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.

The land-based casino industry in Pennsylvania consists of six racetrack (Category 1) casinos, five stand-alone (Category 2) casinos, two resort (Category 3) casinos and four mini-casinos (Category 4).  Casino expansion will continue over the next couple of years with the anticipated openings of an additional Category 4 casinos.
