March 2022 Gaming Revenue Reaches All-Time High According to PA Gaming Control Board

HARRISBURG, PA: The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board reported today that the combined total revenue generated from all forms of gaming along with fantasy contests during March 2022 was the highest revenue achieved in a single month totaling $462,740,098.  The previous high revenue month occurred in November 2021 at $432,490,129.

The record was driven by all-time highs in two gaming sectors including:

  • Retail Table Games which exceeded $90 million for the first time; and,
  • Internet Casino-Type Gaming which exceeded $110 million for the first time.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, sports wagering, fantasy contests and VGTs. The Board has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/. 

The following chart compiles all revenue generated in March 2022 by casinos along with fantasy contests and video gaming terminals operated by other vendors and includes a comparison to total revenue generated last March.

March’s gross revenue from slot machines was $214,721,028, a 7.74% increase in revenue when compared to the $199,290,530 generated in March 2021.

The number of slot machines in operation in March 2022 was 26,107 compared to 19,727 at the casinos in March 2021.

Table games revenue for March 2022 was $94,280,351, an increase of 32.12% from March 2021 when revenue was $71,358,265. The March revenue total was the highest to date topping the previous record of $89,078,876 achieved in October 2021.

Internet Casino-Type Gaming (iGaming) Revenue

Casino games offered online generated gross revenue of $118,118,408 during March 2022 compared to $97,689,743 in March 2021 an increase of 20.91%. The March revenue total was the highest to date topping the previous record of $108,310,642 achieved in January 2022.

March 2022 total sports wagering handle was $714,976,578 or 27.62% above the March 2021 total of $560,259,181. At the same time, the taxable revenue figure for March 2022 was $30,400,581 compared to $29,352,345 in March 2021.

Total adjusted revenue for March 2022 for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,829,287 or 5.16% higher than March 2021 when revenue was $3,641,470. By the close of March 2022, four VGT Terminal Operators were operating the maximum permitted five machines at 63 truck stop establishments.

About the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling involving 16 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.

The land-based casino industry in Pennsylvania consists of six racetrack (Category 1) casinos, five stand-alone (Category 2) casinos, two resort (Category 3) casinos and three mini-casinos (Category 4).  Casino expansion will continue over the next couple of years with the anticipated openings of up to two additional Category 4 casinos.
