PA Gaming Control Board Reports December Gaming Revenue

HARRISBURG, PA: Figures released today by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board show total gaming and fantasy contests revenue generated in the Commonwealth during December 2021 was $406,328,955 which represents an increase of 141% compared to revenue generated in December 2020. 

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board include slot machines, table games, internet gaming, retail and internet sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals (VGTs). The Board has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/. 

The following chart compiles all revenue generated in December 2021 by casinos along with fantasy contests and video gaming terminals operated by other vendors, and includes a comparison to total revenue generated last December:

December’s gross revenue from slot machines at the casinos was $195,499,060, a 363% increase in revenue when compared to the $42,197,822 generated in December 2020 when revenue was impacted by closures and safety measures related to COVID-19.

Sports wagering handle during December 2021 was $750,388,696 compared to December 2020 when the handle was $548,590,065.

At the same time, the taxable sports wagering revenue for December 2021 was $18,817,768 compared to December 2020 when taxable revenue was $34,059,539.

Tax revenue generated from sports wagering during December was $6,774,396*.

Video Gaming Terminals

Total adjusted revenue for December for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,355,153 or 318% higher than December 2020. By the close of December 2021, four VGT Terminal Operators were operating the maximum permitted five machines at 60 truck stop establishments compared to 40 locations in December of 2020.

About the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling at 15 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.

The land-based casino industry in Pennsylvania consists of six racetrack (Category 1) casinos, five stand-alone (Category 2) casinos, two resort (Category 3) casinos and three mini-casinos (Category 4).  Casino expansion will continue over the next couple of years with the anticipated openings of up to two additional Category 4 casinos. A significant job generator in the Commonwealth, casinos and the other types of Board-regulated gaming is expected to generate over $1.8 billion in tax revenue during the 2021/2022 State Fiscal Year.
