Gaming Control Board Reports Monthly Revenue For August

HARRISBURG, PA:  The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board posted reports today on its website that show that the combined total revenue in August 2021 generated from all forms of gaming regulated by the Board along with fantasy contests was $408,092,073.  That represents a increase of over 31% over total revenue in August 2020 of $310,717,728.

Sources of gaming revenue regulated by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board include slot machines, table games, internet casino-type gaming (iGaming), sports wagering, fantasy contests and video gaming terminals (VGTs). The Board has posted separate reports for these types of gaming on its website, https://gamingcontrolboard.pa.gov/ .

The following chart compiles all revenue generated in August 2021 by casinos along with fantasy contests and video gaming terminals operated by other vendors and includes a comparison to total revenue generated last August.

 Additionally, total tax revenue before any adjustments was $168,844,089.

Revenue by Game Type

The Board is also providing a synopsis of revenue year-over-year by types of games: 

Slot Machine Revenue

August’s gross revenue from slot machines was $209,820,720 an increase of 26% when compared to August 2020.

 The number of slot machines in operation in August 2021 was 26,017.

 Slot machine revenue for each of the casinos is as follows. 

 Tax revenue from the play of slots machines in August 2021 was $106,964,678*.

 Table Games Revenue

Table games revenue for August 2021 was $86,313,388 a 33% increase over August 2020 when table games revenue was $65,119,689.

Table games revenue for each of the casinos is as follows.

 Total tax revenue from table games play during August 2021 was $13,907,915 *.

 Internet Casino-Type Gaming (iGaming) Revenue

Casino-type games offered online generated gross revenue of $88,719,021 during August 2021 an increase of 59% when compared to $55,942,525 in August 2020.

A breakdown of revenue of casino games offered online in August 2021 is as follows:

 Tax revenue generated from iGaming play during August 2021 was $39,364,095*.

Sports Wagering Revenue

Taxable revenue during August 2021 for sports wagering was $18,007,244, compared to $18,274,075 in August of last year, a decrease of 1.5%.

Tax revenue generated from sports wagering during August 2021 was $6,482,608*.

Video Gaming Terminals

Total adjusted revenue for August 2021 for video gaming terminals (VGTs) was $3,621,722 an 61% increase when compared to August 2020 when revenue was $2,247,898. By the close of August 2021, four VGT Terminal Operators were operating the maximum permitted five machines at 58 truck stop establishments. That represents a total of 290 VGTs in operation statewide.

Truck Stop VGT adjusted revenue for each of the terminal operators during August 2021 is as follows:

¹ operated VGTs in 25 establishments during August

² operated VGTs in 11 establishments during August

³ operates VGTs in 10 establishments during August

⁴ operates VGTs in 12 establishments during August

 Tax revenue collected from the play of VGTs in August 2021 was $1,883,295.

Fantasy Contests

Fantasy Contests revenue was $1,609,978 in August 2021, a decrease of 25% over August 2020, when revenue was $2,134,494.

 Tax revenue collected from the play of Fantasy Contests in August 2021 was $241,497*.

 About the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board

 The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is tasked to oversee all aspects of gambling at 15 land-based casinos, online casino games, retail and online sports wagering, and Video Gaming Terminals (VGTs) at qualified truck stops, along with the regulation of online fantasy sports contests.

 The land-based casino industry in Pennsylvania consists of six racetrack (Category 1) casinos, five stand-alone (Category 2) casinos, two resort (Category 3) casinos and two mini-casinos (Category 4).  Casino expansion will continue over the next couple of years with the anticipated openings of up to three additional Category 4 casinos.
